Main Door Design Guide: Sizes, Materials and Hardware for Indian Homes

The main door is the one piece of joinery in a house that is judged before anyone walks in. It also has to do a genuinely hard job: seal against Delhi NCR dust, survive 45°C summers and monsoon humidity, carry a heavy lock assembly, and stay square for decades.

Most main door problems trace back to three decisions made at the wrong moment. Here is what to settle before ordering.

Standard main door sizes

Element Common size Notes
Main door width 36 to 42 inches Below 36 inches, moving furniture becomes difficult
Main door height 84 inches standard, 96 inches for a taller look Taller doors need heavier hinges and a stiffer shutter
Shutter thickness 35 to 45mm Thicker resists warping and takes a better lock body
Frame (chowkhat) section 4 x 2.5 inches or larger Undersized frames are the most common cause of long-term misalignment

If you want a grand entrance, a door with a fixed side panel (a narrow glazed or solid panel beside the door) reads wider than a single oversized shutter and is far easier to keep aligned. A 48 inch single shutter is heavy, sags over time, and needs premium hinges to behave.

Material options

Solid hardwood

Teak, sal and similar hardwoods remain the traditional choice. Genuinely durable, repairable, and the only option that can be carved. The caveats are cost, availability of properly seasoned timber, and the fact that poorly seasoned wood will warp within a couple of seasons. If you buy hardwood, ask about seasoning and moisture content, not just the species.

Engineered wood core with veneer

A stable engineered core faced with natural wood veneer. Much more dimensionally stable than solid timber, considerably lighter, and available in large clean panels with no joints. The finish is the weak point: exposed veneer on a west-facing entrance will fade and check without a good exterior-grade coating and periodic recoating.

Engineered core with laminate

The most maintenance-free option. A high-pressure laminate face resists UV, rain splash and dust far better than veneer, and never needs polishing. It cannot be refinished, so a deep scratch stays. For an apartment entrance in an enclosed lobby, this is usually the most sensible value choice.

WPC and uPVC

Fully moisture-proof and termite-proof, which is why these dominate bathroom doors. For a main door, they can look convincing but feel light in the hand, and the perceived quality on opening is noticeably lower. Better suited to service and utility entrances than a front door.

Metal and composite security doors

A steel or composite core clad in a wood-look finish. Excellent for security and dimensional stability, common in independent houses. Heavier, so frame and hinge specification matters more.

Exposed versus sheltered entrances

This decision matters more than the material name.

  • Fully sheltered (apartment lobby, covered porch): almost any material works. Choose on looks and budget.
  • Partly exposed (rain splash reaches the lower third): protect the bottom edge, seal all four edges including the top, and avoid untreated veneer.
  • Fully exposed (direct sun and rain): only exterior-rated constructions survive. Solid hardwood with a marine-grade finish, WPC, or a composite security door. A standard interior-grade flush door will delaminate.

Hardware: where main doors actually fail

Hinges

A main door shutter is heavy. Use at least three hinges on an 84 inch door and four on a 96 inch door. Stainless steel ball-bearing butt hinges, minimum 4 inches, are the standard. Brass-plated mild steel hinges corrode and then bind.

Lock

Options, roughly in order of security:

  • Mortise lock with a cylinder — the baseline. Look for a multi-point or at least a long-throw deadbolt.
  • Multi-point locking — bolts engage at top, middle and bottom. Substantially harder to force and keeps a tall door pulled straight.
  • Digital or smart lock — convenient, increasingly common in NCR apartments. Check the shutter thickness requirement before ordering the door, since most digital locks need a minimum thickness and a specific cutout. Also check what happens when the batteries die and whether there is a mechanical override.

Other essentials

  • Door viewer or video door phone — decide before the shutter is drilled
  • Safety chain or latch
  • Door closer if the door is on a windy corridor, to stop it slamming
  • Threshold and bottom seal — a brush or drop-down seal cuts dust ingress dramatically, which matters a great deal in NCR

The frame is not a detail

More main doors misbehave because of the frame than because of the shutter. Points to insist on:

  • Frame section proportional to the shutter weight; do not let a heavy 45mm shutter hang on a slim frame
  • Frame fixed into the masonry with proper hold-fasts or anchor fasteners, not just foam and screws
  • Gap between frame and wall filled and sealed, otherwise it becomes a dust and insect route
  • Frame material matched to exposure — a timber frame at a splash-prone entrance will rot at the base; a stone or engineered frame base solves it

Design directions that hold up

  • Flush panel with a vertical groove pattern — contemporary, easy to clean, no dust-catching carving
  • Fluted or slatted face — currently popular; specify a finish that can be wiped, since the grooves collect dust
  • Traditional panelled door in hardwood — timeless in independent houses, best with a protected entrance
  • Solid door with a slim glazed side panel — brings light into a dark entrance foyer without compromising security; use toughened or laminated glass
  • Metal inlay or brass strip detailing — a small amount goes a long way; polish requirements rise quickly with quantity

Many clients also ask about direction and placement for vastu reasons. That is a planning decision to settle with the architect before the frame is fixed, since moving a main door afterwards is structural work.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard main door size in India?

Commonly 36 to 42 inches wide and 84 inches high, with 96 inch heights used where a taller entrance is wanted. Anything wider than 42 inches as a single shutter needs heavier hinges and careful specification.

Which material is best for a main door?

For a sheltered apartment entrance, an engineered core with laminate or veneer offers the best balance of stability, looks and cost. For a fully exposed entrance, seasoned hardwood with an exterior finish, WPC or a composite security door are the durable choices.

How many hinges does a main door need?

Three for a standard 84 inch door, four for a 96 inch or unusually heavy shutter. Use stainless steel ball-bearing hinges of at least 4 inches.

Can a digital lock be fitted to any door?

No. Most digital locks specify a minimum shutter thickness and a particular cutout. Decide on the lock before the door is manufactured so the cutout is made at the factory rather than on site.

How do I stop dust coming in under the main door?

A brush strip or drop-down bottom seal, combined with a properly sealed frame-to-wall joint. This is the highest-impact and lowest-cost improvement for NCR homes.
